Hauora Māori Masters Scholarship: Active School Travel Research Project

An exciting new scholarship is available for a Māori Master of Education student who wants to investigate active school travel (walking or wheeling to school) in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Scholarship information

Eligible students: Māori Master of Education students (current students or students enrolling in July 2021)
Value: Full Master of Education fees, plus a $13,500 stipend
Closing date: Friday 14 May 2021

Active school travel (AST), which means walking or wheeling to school, has significant health and environmental benefits, through increased physical activity and reduced vehicle-related pollution. AST levels in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) have declined significantly over recent decades to the point where they are amongst the lowest worldwide.

We have a scholarship opportunity that will allow a Master of Education student to explore this area of research. This student project will draw on the Faculty of Education and Social Work’s substantial body of work in this area, where we have made significant advances in understanding AST associates in the 9-13 year old-age group. Less is known regarding the AST trajectory and associates in younger children, where there are substantial opportunities to lay foundations for ongoing AST.

If you’re interested in generating a deeper understanding of factors of importance for young children's AST, this scholarship may be for you! You will be able to tailor your project to your interests and passions.

Both part-time and full time study options are eligible for the scholarship.

If this sounds like an inspiring project for you, express your interest by emailing Hayley McGlashan.

Expressions of interest close on Friday 14 May 2021.
