Clarissa Mafoe – University of Auckland Rec Centre staff

Clarissa Mafoe says enrolling in the BSportHPE was the best decision she ever made because it opened doors to opportunities that she never knew existed.

“My love for sport began from a young age, playing touch, tag, softball and rugby league at Grey Lynn Park with my family. I knew I wanted to pursue something sport-related in my career so when I found out the University of Auckland was launching a new sport, health and PE degree, I enrolled that very day. It’s been the best decision I ever made.

“What I've enjoyed most about the programme is the multiple pathways offered. The programme recognises that sport is non-linear and can lead to so many different career paths. It’s very forward-thinking, with the latest sport pedagogy and health promotion teaching in New Zealand. Plus, the lecturers are all so supportive and ready to help whenever you ask.

“The BSportHPE has connected me with people involved with local and national sport organisations, such as Sport Auckland, New Zealand Esports Federation, Aktive Auckland, Good Sports and schools. Networking with people from these organisations has opened doors to opportunities that I never knew existed.

“While I’m studying, I am also working at the University Recreation Centre, which has involved being part of the administration team for inter-faculty sports. I love meeting different people from around the University at the heart of such a vibrant and upbeat environment.

“I definitely recommend this programme to anyone and everyone who loves sport, teaching, coaching or health promotion. The degree covers all aspects of the industry, and the flexible pathways help you to find where your passion lies.”
