“I chose a teaching career because I love building relationships with tamariki.”

“Over the years, my skills and decisions led me to a career in teaching. I think with the right approaches to teaching and learning, education can be a positive way for tamariki to succeed.

“I like the Huarahi Māori specialisation because Māori-medium teaching allows me to be myself. I enjoy exploring different subjects and using mātauranga I have previously learnt, and continue to learn, to develop my own teaching practices for the better.

“It’s been great to gain practical experiences in the classroom through practicums. Seeing the difference you can make in a child’s life can motivate you to put your best foot forward.
"I want to use my skillset to help Māori tamariki reach their goals in the modern world, while maintaining those values and teachings of our ancestors."

Anaru Kaiwai (Ngāti Uepohatu, Ngāti Porou) is studying the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Māori specialisation at Tai Tokerau Campus.
