“My favourite part about the Huarahi Māori programme was engaging with and learning under the tutelage of revered Māori academics. The lecturers in the programme have played a colossal role in Maoridom by creating, facilitating and assisting with frameworks, resources and academic compositions that are addressing the educational gap between Māori and non-Māori.

“The Huarahi Māori programme equips you with the skills, tools, and knowledge to be a successful teacher in both the Māori and English medium settings.

“It provides a space to explore, address and challenge influences in education to gain an understanding of the complexities that have and continue to shape education policy and practice in New Zealand.

“Using a combination of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga with theories and ideologies of the West, lecturers such as Hemi Dale, Dr Tony Trinick, Dr Peter Keegan, Ella Newbold, Dr Sophie Tauwehe Tamati, Dr Te Kawehau Hoskins, and Kimai Tocker are only a handful of passionate Māori lecturers that have modernized this combination and developed the Huarahi Māori program to impart the skills, tools and knowledge, absorbed through their teaching experiences, to the next generation of Māori teachers to further Maori affairs in education.

Education broadens the minds and provides alternative perspectives, and this can change students’ outlooks and their approach to the world.

“I would recommend the Huarahi Māori programme to anyone that has a passion for change in Te Ao Māori. I believe education is a primary driver for change as it creates the space for students to obtain critical skills, such as analysing, evaluating, problem solving and communicating etc, to navigate an evolving world. Education broadens the minds and provides alternative perspectives, and this can change students’ outlooks and their approach to the world.

“In addition, Huarahi Māori has also provided me with the confidence to scaffold on and further develop my knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga which has re-ignited a personal endeavour to continue my learning journey in Te Ao Māori outside of Huarahi Māori.

“The University of Auckland, through the Huarahi Māori Programme, has prepared me with the skills and tools to further my studies and undertake a Masters in Education. My research interest pertains to Bilingualism and Biliteracy in Māori Medium Education.

“Postgraduate study has provided the opportunity to deepen my understanding of education and professional practice by exploring historical and contemporary factors that have influenced education in New Zealand.

"The staff, lecturers, and facilitators provide quality resources and information needed for self-directed learning, while also providing quality critical content that engages and challenges the perspective of the student.”
