Taine Whitten-Young - Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Māori

A TeachNZ Scholarship will allow Taine to achieve his dream of becoming a teacher without the added financial stress of studying.

When Taine Whitten-Young saw the 2022 Te Waka Whakarei Career Changer Scholarship advertised, he knew it would help him on the way to achieving his teaching dream.

“I’ve worked in a handful of different industries but becoming a teacher has always been my goal since high school.”

Taine, who will be studying a Bachelor of Education (Huarahi Māori) says the scholarship will help him out with expenses, meaning he’ll be free to focus on his studies.

Taine plans on beginning his teaching career in primary schools after graduation and eventually move up to teaching secondary.

“I look forward to seeing where else this journey takes me."

Taine hopes to gain a variety of skills from his degree and believes the University of Auckland is the place to learn them.

“I plan to use all the skills I gain to be the best teacher I can possibly be. I want to understand the world from multiple perspectives.

“I am most looking forward to the journey. All the ups and downs, the people I meet on the way and being a step closer to achieving my dream.

“When I found out I had been awarded this scholarship, I was absolutely over the moon. I am glad because now I don’t have to worry about my student loan getting any bigger.”
