Clubs and societies

Clubs and societies are a big part of life in Te Pūtahi Mātauranga | The Faculty of Arts and Education. They connect you with peers, support your passions and enrich your studies through friendship, collaboration, and community.

School of Music Students' Association (SOMSA)

Our Student Support and Engagement team works alongside student-led clubs and initiatives to help build an inclusive, lively campus culture. We’re here to support the social, cultural, and academic life of the Faculty through your ideas and initiatives.

Student clubs and initiatives are essential for:

  • Building a diverse and inclusive community
  • Encouraging leadership, creativity, and collaboration
  • Enriching student life beyond lectures and tutorials
  • Creating a sense of belonging on campus

There are a large number of clubs and societies within our Faculty that reflect the variety of interests our students have.

The Arts and Education Student Association (AESA) is the largest association in our Faculty. AESA’s mission is to cultivate a supportive and inclusive community within the Faculty of Arts and Education, empowering students in their academic, social, and professional growth and supporting student voice and wellbeing.

How we support clubs

We offer a range of support to empower clubs and their members and help bring their ideas to life. In some cases, we can assist with a financial contribution. For example, the Student Support and Engagement team has paid for the hire of poster boards for a Photo Soc exhibition and made financial contributions to Arts! Week and AESA’s Breakfast Club events.

Depending on your needs, we can provide:

  • Event support and logistics (planning, running events and promoting events through Faculty channels)
  • Room bookings
  • Event collaborations (opportunities to co-host funded events with the Student Support and Engagement team or other clubs)
  • Professional development opportunities, such as workshops and resources for club executives (e.g. leadership, event planning, budgeting)
  • Guidance and mentoring (one-on-one support for club leaders, help navigating University processes and policies)
  • Health and safety advice, including risk assessments and compliance
  • Equipment loan (e.g. candy floss machine, tables, signage)

To stay aligned with University policy, we can’t support:

  • Offsite events
  • Events serving alcohol
  • Payments to speakers/performers
  • Travel and transport
  • Website hosting fees
  • Koha, gifts, prizes or awards
  • Activities that only benefit the executive or a small number of people
