Charity Faamausili - Early Childhood Educator
Charity always wanted to be a teacher. By adding one year to her Bachelor of Commerce degree, she made a career change from accountant to ECE teacher.
Career: Infant and toddler teacher, Auckland
Programme: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
"I moved to New Zealand from Samoa to pursue a Commerce Bachelor Degree at the University of Auckland. I had heard great things about the University's reputation, which was the main reason I made the move.
After graduating from the University, I was blessed to work as a consultant at an accounting firm for about two years.
"Although it was a great and challenging role, I still felt out of place—I have always had my childhood dream at the back of my mind. I realised I would not be true to myself if I continued what I was doing so I decided to change my career path.
"To be honest, I really did not know what I was getting myself into. All I knew was that I wanted to become a teacher. So I did some research and talked to friends who were currently working in the education industry as secondary, primary and early childhood teachers. This turned my interest to early childhood.
"After getting some experience as a relief teacher I was able to re-affirm my decision. The next step was to do a Graduate Diploma at the University of Auckland.
Everyday I go to work, I am not just going for the sake of going to work and getting paid, but to inspire, guide and care for
the little people I work with.
"During my time as a student I had great support from my lecturers, tutors, support services like the library and the Pasifika Success, and my classmates. Whenever I felt lost or needed the extra help, there was always support available.
"I met inspiring and motivating classmates, which made my journey more interesting and fun. I hope that I will be able to work alongside them one day.
"Everyday I go to work I am not just going for the sake of going to work and getting paid, but to inspire, guide and care for the little people I work with. Through this, I am making an impact on their lives and helping them to gain a great foundation of basic skills that will be useful in their daily lives and future educational milestones."
