Key facts

Career: Geothermal engineer
Programme: Master of Energy

“I’m originally from Mexico, and I decided to pursue the Master of Energy in New Zealand because I wanted to learn from known experts in geothermal energy, get hands on experience, and to contribute to the technological advancements in the field.

“Being at the University of Auckland gave me the opportunity to easily connect to a network related to my area of study. I was also able to share my final research project with the geothermal energy community by publishing it in a scientific journal.

“New Zealand is one of the leading countries in geothermal energy development and placed fourth in the world for installed geothermal power capacity. The hands-on knowledge I’ve gained from being here is fundamental to my current job with MB Century in Taupo, where we specialise in local and overseas projects.

“I am currently working with the research and development team in their Reservoir Engineering Department to finalise a new high-temperature logging tool for imaging the inner condition of pipes in the steam-producing geothermal wells. It uses sensors to identify problems such as corrosion, cracks, scaling, or holes in the pipes. This data is then sent to our clients for action – it’s important to address issues specifically, as these wells generate electricity for thousands of people.

“I enjoy my role for the new challenges each day brings, and I love being able to find innovative ways to provide energy that’s sustainable and environmentally friendly.”
