Related faculties and departments

We enjoy close ties with several University of Auckland faculties and departments.

From small to large-scale research institute

Until 2008, when ABI was established as a large scale research institute, it had operated as a research institute managed by other faculties.

ABI was formed in 2001 and we started our gradual move out of the Faculty of Engineering, although we now stand separate to the Faculty of Engineering we have always valued our links to the wider university.

Joint academic appointments

The Institute has joint academic appointments and strong research links across three faculties: Engineering, Science, and Medical and Health Sciences.

The Faculty of Engineering is ABI’s nearest neighbour faculty and we have a very close relationship with the Department of Engineering Science. Several academic staff in the department do their research at ABI.

The Department of Engineering Science manages the BE(Hons) in Biomedical Engineering. If you graduate with this, there’s a good chance you’ll choose doctoral or masters study at the Institute.

We also have a long-term association with the Department of Physiology in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. Several principal investigators and doctoral students are joint members with the Department of Physiology and the Department of Anatomy with Radiology.
