Why study with us?
Our emphasis at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) is innovative research that has real-world applications, especially in healthcare. We are a world-renowned research institute that attracts researchers and students of high calibre from across the globe.
We offer the following degrees: Masters in Engineering (ME) with a thesis in Bioengineering, and PhD. These programmes are entirely research-based and open up doors for you to pursue other various other career pathways.
No international fees for PhD students
New full-time international PhD students residing in New Zealand will be accorded domestic status for the purposes of tuition fees. This means they will pay the same fees as domestic students.
ABI is home to some of the brightest minds in New Zealand – our researchers were some of the first in the world to develop computer models of human organs and new innovative medical devices. The work done at ABI is cutting-edge, exciting and extends beyond conventional bioengineering research. ABI has developed award-winning technology including a human-powered submarine, and utilised the same technologies that are used in the film industry to generate avatars for navigating the healthcare system.
Internationally recognised researchers
We enjoy close affiliations with world-class institutions around the world including Oxford University, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of Sheffield, the University of Melbourne and the National University of Singapore (NUS). Students at ABI have access to global networking to support their projects, providing them with a wealth of ideas, expertise, resources, and unique opportunities for research visits and collaborations.
As a student at ABI, you will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and equipment. These include numerically controlled lathes, 5-axis milling machines, and specialised imaging and testing equipment such as a MicroCT imaging device.
ABI has a wide range of commercial activities that are a direct consequence of our research findings. We have had over 10 different spin out companies established in the past five years.
A significant feature of ABI is the encouragement of entrepreneurial activities by PhD students and postdoctoral fellows.
