Engineering

Build a career solving the problems that shape how we live, from infrastructure to healthcare and technology.

A career in engineering

Engineers shape the world around us. They design the bridges we cross, write the software we use, develop the machines behind our products and create the devices that keep people healthy. It's a career for people who enjoy maths, science and problem solving, and who want to see their work make a real difference.

At the University of Auckland, you can specialise in Biomedical, Chemical and Materials, Civil, Computer Systems, Electrical and Electronic, Engineering Science, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software or Structural Engineering. The range of industries these cover means graduates have plenty of room to explore, and to change direction as their interests grow.

All ten specialisations are accredited by Engineering New Zealand, a signatory to the Washington Accord, so our Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is an internationally recognised qualification. Along the way, students can draw on the employability labs, mentors and workshops on offer to prepare for life after study.

Sector outlook

Engineering graduates work across a wide range of sectors, including:

  • Consulting engineering firms
  • Construction and infrastructure
  • Manufacturing and industry
  • Technology and software
  • Health and biomedical
  • Local and central government
  • Research and education

Engineers can move between organisations, industries and disciplines, and many progress into project leadership, management and director roles.

Because our degree is Washington Accord–accredited, graduates are well placed to work all around the world.

Job options

Engineers make things happen. Most of today’s products and services have an engineering component, enabling us to enjoy longer, healthier, more comfortable and fulfilling lives.

From the large-scale infrastructure of the physical environment we inhabit to the virtual environment of computing and information technology, from applied research to elite sports, the work of engineers has a huge impact on our lives.

There are many areas you can specialise in, with ten specialisations to choose from and five departments within them, there's something for everyone.
