Logan Bow: Why choose Architecture?

Graduated BAS student Logan Bow tells us about his decision to pursue a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS), sharing how his perceptions have evolved, and offering insights and advice for aspiring students.

Programme: Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS)
Final BAS Design Project: Redeveloping Queens Wharf in Auckland CBD

Why did you choose to study Architecture at the University of Auckland?

"I chose to study architecture at the University of Auckland because of its high ranking prestige and close proximity to home. The architecture course itself was also more on the critically creative end of the spectrum, which aligned perfectly with my own commercial art practice."

"I always knew I wanted to study architecture since I was in intermediate. I would spend ages on Minecraft building structures and building models with multiple sets of Jenga blocks. I did one of my first architecture projects in Year 8."

"I thoroughly enjoyed mathematics and physics throughout school, but also fine arts and graphic design. Fine arts was my favourite because of the flexibility to be creative and the supportive teaching staff."

What was your perception of architecture prior to study vs. now as a graduate?

"I had talked to people and researched about the architecture course to find it was uniquely creative and critical of contemporary practice prior to studying. Now graduated, this definition most definitely is found in Architectural Media within the course which is my favourite paper. I managed to dualistically integrate my art practice into the media papers I took which I did not expect. "

"Looking forward I am quite interested in the future of Auckland City. I think we have something very special here, and I would like my studies and work to contribute to the built environment in the future. Because of this I have been and I continue to push the limits of architectural urban design in its many forms."

"Some of my research is directed toward being critical of contemporary culture, so I am motivated to strive for the new, and I think that what the University of Auckland is all about."

What were some of the highlights of your studies?

"By far, the learning facilities are top quality. In my first year, I unregretfully spent as much time as possible in the workshop to learn how to use as many tools and machinery as I could to widen my skill and knowledge base. I still find it funny that there is a flamethrower that I used to melt rock into lava for Media and Design."

"The studio's facilities are spacious and contribute to a sense of communal unity when working throughout our courses. It forged strong friendships that have developed over the years, and I have made some of my best friends there."

"I have gained a much wider world view on the built environment. The multilayered ways society functions and the different ways people live and inhabit spaces. In terms of technical skills, during my studies, I have expanded my knowledge base of materials and mechanical ways to fabricate things. I particularly specialised in using Rhino, Photoshop and AI to digitally design as a process"

"Other highlights include the extensive travels around the world on study tours and exchange programs, which I extremely recommend to all architecture students to get involved in."

What would you say to high school students who might be considering studying architecture?

"I think a lot of high school students are unsure about what they want to study at university or as a career. I would say that a Bachelor of Architectural Studies provides you with so many skills and a widened world view that enables you to access so many advanced fields of study and career opportunities."

"However, if you do choose to study architecture, it is a complex programme. There is no cutting corners, but if you work hard, it is all worth it in the end, because when you look back at everything you have accomplished, it is always mindblowing and inspires me to keep moving forward."
