Research themes

Explore Auckland Bioengineering Institute’s research themes and discover how our work is advancing understanding, innovation and impact across bioengineering and health.

Computational and experimental physiology

Modern healthcare is moving more towards personalised health plans for individual patients. The ability to model individual organs and then integrate them into whole-body systems will allow comparisons of injuries and diseases that will revolutionise both diagnosis and treatment.

Medical devices and instrumentation

Our research projects provide novel new tools for clinicians to diagnose and treat patients with medical conditions such as stroke – everything from implantable devices to robotic exoskeletons. This will lead to better patient outcomes and reduced healthcare costs.

Engineering for clinical technologies

We aim to drive improvements in women’s health – such as pregnancy and childbirth – as well as advances in medical imaging, biomedical informatics and surgical engineering. One way we do this is by looking at better ways to use medical data.

Biomimetics and augmented human technologies

Modern entertainment, transport and communication increasingly rely on human interfaces and personalised AI assistants. Our research involves developing innovative models of human and animal anatomy and physiology for use in these industries.
