Executive leadership team

Meet the people in our Executive Leadership Team who lead the Auckland Bioengineering Institute. Together with the Academic Leadership Team, they form ABI’s Strategic Planning Group, which sets the strategic direction and supports the Institute’s growth.

Director

The Director provides academic, operational, and strategic leadership for the Institute. The role also contributes to University-wide direction as part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), which is an advisory group to the Vice-Chancellor.

Deputy Director

The Deputy Director supports the Director and the Principal Investigators group. The role guides research policy, administrative matters, and strategic priorities across the Institute.

Institute Operations Manager

The Institute Operations Manager leads the delivery of strategy through effective business operations. The role manages external and internal relationships and ensures professional services and administration support the Institute’s goals.

Associate Director – Research

The Associate Director (Research) leads the implementation of ABI’s overall research strategy. This role supports investigators in developing collaborative projects, ensures alignment with Institute priorities, and fosters innovation across disciplines.

Associate Director – Postgraduate

The Associate Director (Postgraduate) oversees ABI’s postgraduate programmes. The role provides leadership in student recruitment, supervision support, and training initiatives, ensuring a high-quality academic experience for all doctoral and master’s students.

Associate Director – Māori

The Associate Director (Māori) ensures that Māori perspectives are embedded across ABI’s activities. This role leads initiatives that strengthen partnerships with Māori communities, uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and enhance cultural capability within the Institute.

Associate Director – Equity & Diversity

The Associate Director (Equity & Diversity) drives ABI’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The role oversees policies, programmes, and initiatives that create a welcoming environment, improve representation, and embed diversity into all aspects of Institute life.

Strategic Relationship Manager

The Strategic Relationship Manager builds and maintains ABI’s partnerships with industry, government, and community stakeholders. This role connects external organisations with the Institute’s research expertise, supports collaboration opportunities, and helps translate innovative science into real-world impact.
