Tuākana & Mā te Matatau Business: Māori and Pasifika Student Success

The Tuākana network across the University exists to optimize the academic success and academic journey of Māori & Pasifika Students. Mā te Matatau works alongside the Tuākana Programme in providing additional support. Both these programs exist for students enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) or Bachelor of Property (BProp) degrees.

Tuākana Programme Mā te Matatau

In Te Reo Māori, the words Tuākana and Teinā refer to the relationship between an older (tuākana) person and a younger (teinā) person and is specific to teaching and learning.

The Tuākana Programme exists to champion Māori and Pacific academic undergraduate success at the University of Auckland. Our team here at the Business school, are made up of high-achieving Māori and Pacific tutors who have already finished their first year of undergraduate studies and are completing undergraduate and/or postgraduate degrees.

They offer weekly workshops, office hours, drop in clinics and other sessions to help you.

Mā te Matatau works alongside Tuākana in providing support to our Maori & Pasifika Students for assignment and exam preparation.

This service offers additional one to one tutoring for Māori and Pacific students who are wanting help on any of the core Business Undergraduate First Year Courses (BUS111, BUS112, BUS114, BUS115, INFOSYS110 & BUS202).

This is a free service so reach out to your tutors if you're interested in taking part.

All first year courses are assigned with a Tuākana tutor. Core Business courses are assigned a Mā te Matatau Tutor. These tutors are high-achieving Māori and Pasifika students further along in their academic journey. Group workshops, one-on-one tutoring, study spaces, financial and material assistance, among other things, are offered. There are both physical and virtual spaces provided for the community.

The Tuākana & Mā te Matatau study spaces (260-062) & tutor offices (260-078) are located on Level 0 of OGGB.

All relevant information for each course and the Tuākana and Mātatau sessions can be found on the Tūakana & Mā te Matatau Canvas page.

We understand that financial challenges may arise during your studies. Tuākana & Ma te Mātatau Business are here to assist Māori and Pasifika students who genuinely require financial support through the Business & Economics Tuākana Manaakitanga Fund.
