Organisational Structure

The Career Leader structure was introduced by the end of 2019 to establish a more effective organisational structure and efficiently utilise the potential of the Career Leader team. Since then, the roles have been continuously developing to suit the needs of the team. This organisational structure also aims to develop the relevant transferable skills of the Career Leaders such as leadership, team management, teamwork, communication skills and much more.

Executive

Chief Executive Officer

The CEO is responsible for strategic coordination across all leadership roles and the wider team. They oversee the entire Career Leader team and lead the development of both short-term and long-term plans. The CEO also liaises with internal and external stakeholders, seeking opportunities for the volunteers, representing the team around the University, ensuring a healthy team culture, making executive decisions to ensure smooth operations, and preparing succession plans and resource allocation.

Data and Analytics Senior Career Leader

The DA Senior Lead manages and trains the DA Career Leader team, and assists the administrative and analysis tasks of the Business Careers Centre. They are primarily involved in project management and supervising the analysis, writing and editing of reports, which include but are not limited to: Drop-in Analysis, Recruitment Survey, Passport to Business Survey, LinkedIn, and other developing projects. The DA Senior Lead and their team also survey  university students on their experience with Career Leaders. The DA Senior Lead’s main purpose is to ensure that the reports produced are accurate and of high standard to inform the Business Careers Centre and relevant employers. The DA team is supported by the Career Leader Alumni Advisers.

Events Senior Career Leaders

The Events Senior Leads manages the Events Career Leader team. This involves assisting in the planning and facilitation of events run by the Business Careers Centre. Their main goal is to brainstorm, plan and organise events for students, aiming for at least one event per semester. The Events Senior Leads’ purpose is to increase student engagement with the Business Careers Centre. Some of the events we run include Fast Friends Friday, the annual Commerce Race and help facilitate Speed Networking Events throughout the semesters.

Human Resources Senior Career Leaders

The HR Senior Leads manage the whole Junior Career Leader team, with the main purpose of strengthening team relationships, volunteer productivity and experience. They are the main leaders who keep the whole team together by facilitating any people related activities that are internal to the Career Leader team. Some of the main responsibilities include the recruitment process, communications, volunteer organisation, training and gathering volunteer feedback, and event organisation such as the Annual General Meeting and casual catch-ups.

Marketing Senior Career Leaders

The Marketing Senior Leads manage the Marketing Career Leader team and have an important, evolving role in promoting Business Careers services to students. Their main goal is to increase the Career Leader student reach and build good relationships with university staff, students, and employers through multiple channels such as advertising with other clubs, using social media and increasing on-campus presence.

Operations and P2B Career Leaders

The Operations and P2B Career Leads ensure that the Career Leader activities are running smoothly and efficiently. They are responsible for facilitating the Online Checks service. This includes the Passport to Business programme for Semester 2. The Operations and P2B Career Leads also provide secretarial and administrative assistance to the Career Leader Executive Team and Careers Centre, and volunteering in the Careers office.

Junior Career Leader Teams

Junior Career Leaders are an integral part of the Career Leader team. There are three teams that volunteers can apply for and join:

  • Data and Analytics
  • Marketing
  • Events

Not interested in any of the above teams? That's fine. You can be a Career Leader without a portfolio. Your primary contribution will involve Drop-in, Online Checks and Special Events volunteering activities. Though like any organisation there needs to be a 'reporting line' so you will be reporting to the HR leads.

All Career Leaders (no matter their position in the team) are expected to volunteer for Drop-in, Online Checks and Special Events.

Why should you join Career Leaders?

Co-Curricular Recognition Programme

Volunteering as part of the Career Leaders can be credited towards one of the Co-Curricular Programme Paths. These awards formally recognise a student’s involvement at university and are recorded on the university transcript. There are four pathways available:

  1. Leadership
  2. Community Engagement
  3. Global Citizens
  4. Innovation

Career Leaders can be credited in either Leadership or Community Engagement.

Students who have completed more than two pathways are awarded a Distinguished Graduate Award. More information is available on the award page

Hear from some of our Career Leaders about their experiences

"Being a Career Leader is truly an amazing experience. Of course I get to help students with the application process including checking their CVs and cover letters, but it is so much more than that. Students often feel isolated and nervous about the application process and it is fulfilling to be able to support and encourage them any way I can.” - Prerna

"Being a career leader has been an invaluable experience where I’ve not only gained many transferable skills but have also met some amazing people. Being a part of the events team has given me a chance to experience the behind-the-scenes of the many events the business centre runs and has taught me essential organisational and facilitation skills.” - Raeesah

“Being a Career Leader has been a priceless experience where I've not only found a community but also have learnt invaluable skills about the workplace and built my confidence” - Jeeny

“Career Leaders not only helped me learn many new skills but has also let me help other people who also needed it” - Angeline

“Being a Career Leader has expanded my knowledge around job applications and the real-life workforce. Furthermore, my leadership skills have developed through checking students resumes, cover letter & linkedin profiles” - Joanna
