Why Business Analytics and Information Systems?

"As someone who enjoys working with numbers and making data-driven decisions, Business Analytics courses stood out because projects often mirrored real-life scenarios. This helped me understand how my analytical interests could be applied to relevant industry challenges.

"The best part about both Business Analytics and Information Systems majors is the broad range of career opportunities. Both majors equip you with valuable and diverse skill sets, so I was never worried about being limited to a single career path."

Memorable moments from university study

"I thoroughly enjoyed taking the data visualisation paper as one of the Business Analytics courses. Learning about design concepts and visualisation techniques was really fun, and it made me realise my passion for conveying and interpreting data.

"I also enjoyed the content in the Business Systems Analysis course, such as learning the end-to-end process of developing a basic system. This required using both analytical and logical thinking, which initially sparked my interest in Information Systems."

What does a Business Insights Analyst do?

"As a Business Insights Analyst (BIA), I analyse customer data and retail trends to inform our strategy for the loyalty programme. Some of my day-to-day tasks include extracting data from our database with code, deriving insights from the extracted data, and suggesting actions or next steps for relevant stakeholders. In this role, I engage in technical and non-technical work and collaborate across various multi-skilled teams."

How university learnings continue to shape her career

"Now, at the beginning of my professional career, I refer not only to the content I learned at university but also to my experiences. In university, I initially struggled to work cohesively in group projects, as different group members had different priorities, work styles, and expectations.

"Looking back on it now, I realise how important it was to develop teamwork skills. For my current job and most other careers, team collaboration and general soft skills are essential. Learning how to work with other people is just as important as being able to work independently."

Advice for students

"You do not need a set career plan when starting your university studies. Instead, my advice would be the opposite: to be open-minded. The first year of a Bcom degree is comprised of core courses that allow students to explore what areas of business they are interested in. For example, after taking all my core courses in my first year of university, I developed different interests, which led to changing my Accounting major to Business Analytics and Information Systems. Uncertainty is normal. Stay curious and explore what is best for you."
