The 2024 NZASC Workshop: Immigration and its Economic Impacts

Spurred by post-COVID recovery and re-opening of borders, international migration to OECD countries is at a record high. Migrants confer numerous benefits on the host economy, including addressing labour shortages, bringing in new skills, experiences, ideas and business networks. However, immigrant assimilation can put a strain on local resources, providing scope for domestic policymakers and business leaders to design mechanisms that effectively leverage immigrant talent in pursuit of a productive and vibrant economy as well as a cohesive and inclusive society.

The New Zealand APEC Study Centre is proud to organise the annual workshop on 27 September 2024. World-class scholars and practitioners will shed light on global talent flows, immigration and its economic impacts.

The 2023 NZASC Workshop: Geo-economic Fragmentation and Supply Chain Restructuring

Recent pandemic and geopolitical tensions have caused significant disruptions to global supply chains, and the potential costs of economic fragmentation are now at the center of public debate among scholars, business leaders, and senior policymakers. International organizations have pointed to possible consequences of policy-driven geoeconomic fragmentation for post-pandemic recovery and long-run economic prosperity. As a follow-up to this year’s APEC meetings hosted by the United States, the New Zealand APEC Study Centre is proud to organize the annual workshop on 1 December, 2023. World-class scholars and practitioners will shed light current geoeconomic issues and discuss the future development of supply chains in the APEC region.

The 2022 NZASC Workshop: The Future of Supply Chains in the APEC Region: Implications for Business

The Covid-19 pandemic and geo-political tensions have resulted in the reshaping of supply chains in the APEC region with far-reaching implications for businesses in sourcing inputs, penetrating new markets and ensuring sustainable growth. This trend is likely to reshape the future of globalization and the organization of global economic activity. In the workshop hosted by the New Zealand APEC Study Centre on 1-2 December, world-class scholars and practitioners shed light on the opportunities and challenges for globalization in New Zealand and the APEC region in the coming future.

The 2021 NZASC Workshop: Globalization in the Post-Pandemic Era: Issues for the Asia-Pacific Region

One week after the 2021 official APEC process hosted by New Zealand, the Centre organized an online workshop on November 18-19, 2021 to review the major outcomes of the APEC meetings and to launch the Centre’s future research agenda. The workshop brought together distinguished scholars, senior policymakers, business leaders, representatives from the diplomatic communities, and other key stakeholders to discuss these issues and to explore New Zealand’s role in leading Asia-Pacific economic integration in the post-pandemic era. The workshop covered three main themes: services trade in the post-pandemic world, Asia and the future of globalization, the rise of central bank digital currencies.

The 2021 APEC Study Centre Consortium Conference
