Working during your study

Working part-time is a great way to earn extra money, develop your English language and business skills, and meet new people.

Is working part-time right for you?

Most international students who are studying in New Zealand are legally eligible to work part-time.

You can find out all about working during your studies at:

However, you will need to think carefully about whether you can fit part-time work into your schedule in without it affecting your academic studies. This can be especially challenging for postgraduate students. Contact us in the Careers Centre if you are concerned about whether a part-time job is right for you.

You can look for part-time job vacancies in our BizStudent Update newsletter, which is emailed to you on Thursdays.

Working in NZ during the holidays

Most employers in New Zealand expect graduates to have some NZ work experience. The holidays, especially the long summer break, offer a great opportunity for undergraduate students to gain this experience. Many New Zealand organisations offer paid internships.

Summer vacancies in large organisations are advertised from mid-January onwards, for internships that begin the following November. Smaller companies may also offer work experience over summer but these are usually advertised a little later in the year, from April onwards.

Are you eligible?

Most undergraduate international students are eligible to work full-time over summer. If you are studying a postgraduate course your situation may be different.
