Southeast Asia research funding: Call for proposals 2023-2024

Purpose

The New Zealand Asia Institute (NZAI) is working in partnership with the Nicholas Tarling Charitable Trust to support research or other scholarly activity on Southeast Asia.

In line with the purposes of the Trust, the NZAI is seeking proposals for funding support for scholarly activity with a substantial focus on some part of the Southeast Asian region, including any of its constituent subnational areas or transnational processes.

All activities supported financially by the Trust are undertaken with the aim of producing a clear output by the end of the financial year in which the funds are awarded. This output may come in the form of a preliminary report, seminar, working paper or other output as stated in the
application.

Eligibility and scope

Scholars, including graduate research students, proposing to undertake research or other scholarly activity with a substantial focus on Southeast Asia in the 2023-24 financial year.

The NZAI will not normally award grants of more than $6,000 for an individual project in a financial year, but proposals above this amount may be considered depending on availability of funds.

Tarling Trust funding may be used in conjunction with other sources of research funding but will not be awarded to applicants concurrently supported by other Tarling Trust funding. This means that if you are applying for Tarling Trust funds administered by another organization you will not be eligible for an award administered by the NZAI.

Funds awarded will be administered by the NZAI in line with University of Auckland policies regarding travel and other spending. Supported activities may include costs such as research assistance, travel for research purposes, access to archival or other data, translation services, or other costs as agreed. The funds will not support conference attendance, per diems or incidental expenses.
