Inaugural Lecture: Professor Martin Stiles

Title: My electrifying journey to the heart of arrhythmias

In his inaugural lecture, Martin will take you through his journey that began in Hamilton and has come full circle to Waikato Hospital and the University of Auckland, where he now works and researches in the field of Cardiac Electrophysiology. He will share how this Cardiologist came to focus on research and teaching with the opportunities that presented. He will also talk about research collaboration and maintaining an international profile from a small country at the bottom of the world.

Martin trained in Dunedin, Hamilton, Edinburgh and Leicester, then studied for a PhD at the University of Adelaide before returning to New Zealand. His clinical and research interests are in Atrial Fibrillation and the Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death. He has Chaired international expert consensus documents on Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Programming and on the Investigation of Patients with Cardiac Arrest. Martin is the Chair of the NZ Division of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ). He is the first New Zealander to Chair the CSANZ Scientific Committee and sits on the Executive Board of the Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society.
