Healthy messages for healthy kids

We aim to understand how parents/caregivers, whānau and kids want to have health messages communicated to them so we can develop an educational resource for health professionals working in the community.

What's involved?

Parents, caregivers and whānau of children aged 7 to 12 years will be asked to complete an online survey. It will take about 20-30 minutes. The following topics will be covered in this survey:

  • What being healthy means to your child
  • Your experiences of health professionals talking to your child about their health
  • What you think health professionals could do to communicate health messages to children better

To thank participants for their time we will donate $1 to a New Zealand children's charity of the participant's choice. Options include Kids Can, Starship Foundation, Pillars, YES Disability, Rainbow Youth and Hillary Outdoors.

There is also a second part of the study where we will ask kids (aged 7 to 12 years) similar questions as we are asking in the survey, but we will do it as an interview over the phone or online.

If you are interested in knowing more about how your child can participate in the second part of this study, details will be provided at the end of the parent/caregiver survey. Each child interviewed will receive a $40 voucher as koha.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the online survey you must be:

  • Aged 18 or over
  • A parent, caregiver or whānau member who is taking care of a child who is currently aged 7 to 12 years old
  • Living in Aotearoa/New Zealand (note: the child must also be living in New Zealand)
