Morgan McCaskill

Morgan, of Ngāti Maru, chose to study toward a Master of Nursing to empower Māori nurses to take centre stage in hospice care by weaving culture with compassion.

“I decided to study close to home at the Tai Tokerau Campus to be near my connections and support people. Staying in Whangārei has provided an excellent opportunity for my career to flourish and to learn more about the healthcare needs of my close-knit community.

The unwavering support from my family has been invaluable during my studies, especially with young children to look after. It has meant a lot that I have been able to continue to be with my community during this important stage of study; I couldn’t recommend it more.

“My study has helped with my current role at the hospice and recognising the critical need for more time and attention for individuals at the end of their lives. I see the end of life as a gateway to fully embrace life, and being able to use my knowledge of the local perspectives to empathise and connect with the community’s feelings and thoughts has been vital.”
