Studying at a postgraduate level has allowed Rosalind to pick papers that support the specialised knowledge required for her work while also expanding into areas that she had never considered exploring.

“I work as a family therapist, supporting children with serious health conditions and their families throughout the greater Waikato region. I also support parents grieving the loss of a baby or child, and those who experience late term miscarriage, stillbirth, or who have received a poor medical diagnosis during pregnancy.

“Completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences and subsequent Master of Health Sciences has allowed me to pick from a range of papers that support the specialised knowledge required for my work while also expanding into areas that I had never considered exploring.

“Through this programme, I have developed my ability to analyse and to look at the bigger picture, not just what is immediately in front of me. I love learning from the other students and lecturers and being able to have robust but respectful debates around differing perspectives. Studying this programme has also significantly increased my knowledge of infant development and palliative care.

"Studying at a postgraduate level is a different experience to my undergraduate degree. The knowledge that you bring into the room from your own experiences, both personally and professionally, is highly regarded by the lecturers.

I chose the University of Auckland as I was able to study by distance to fit around my job, while block courses allow me to connect with other students and teaching staff. Having a recognised and respected qualification also positively impacts my ability to advocate for families.

"I want to make a difference by helping families to process significant loss and grief, so that they can feel joy again, even if that loss sits with them forever."
