Shyla Mishra
From biomedical research to clinical diagnostics and biotechnology, Shyla Mishra has discovered a wide range of possibilities through studying Biomedical Science.
For Shyla, Biomedical Science offered the chance to combine her interest in science with a desire to improve human health. An early interest in the field of pathology has since developed into hands-on research.
“I was particularly interested in pathology because it felt highly relevant to real-life global issues. Now, through my postgraduate studies, I’m working towards alleviating diseases and understanding them at a much deeper level.”
Shyla says the combination of theory and practical learning has been one of the most rewarding aspects of studying Biomedical Science.
One misconception is that Biomedical Science is only a pathway into clinical programmes like medicine. In reality, the field is incredibly diverse, with careers in biomedical research, biotechnology, cell therapy, clinical diagnostics, clinical trials and many more.
“The field is incredibly broad, covering so many areas of human biology and disease processes. I’ve also loved the practical side. Working in the lab has given me valuable insight into what a career in biomedical research looks like, and it’s rewarding to be involved in research that could improve medical outcomes.”
A particular highlight came when research from Shyla’s honours project contributed to a larger study that was accepted for publication in an international scientific journal.
“My goal was simply to complete my thesis and gain research experience. I never expected my work to become part of a published study, so being recognised as a co-author was an incredible opportunity.”
Shyla hopes to continue working in research or a clinical laboratory, contributing to a better understanding of diseases that currently have limited treatment options.
