I’m currently studying a Master of Health Practice, specialising in Addiction Studies. I chose to study at the University of Auckland as it has an excellent reputation that made it difficult to ignore.

I ended up in the addictions field due to a couple of reasons. Growing up in rural Canada, the only information about people who use drugs was unbelievably discriminative. I found out about harm reduction, worked with some stunning people and fell in love with the industry.

I currently work as a lead for a number of harm reduction programmes and services for people who use drugs, including drug checking. My studies are inseparable from my work; the core courses reminded me how to engage with people who use drugs, listen for the key messages and create positive change goals for my clients. While working through my dissertation, a scoping (literature) review considering stimulant use in safe consumption sites, I am continuously reminded about how current policy and programmes for people who use drugs are not yet strong enough and how people who use drugs deserve care that is self-defined and client centred.

Through this programme I’ve connected with other passionate people and gained skills that I’ll carry though my career.

The NZ Addictions workforce is small (yet has a massive heart), and I’ve been able to forge multifaceted relationships with kaimahi. The networking opportunities afforded to students should be highlighted as a benefit of study more often!

I’d encourage anyone looking to pursue their masters to do it! It’s tough but extremely rewarding. Challenge yourself; personal growth only comes from being challenged, in my opinion. The professors, supporting staff and University want you to thrive, just reach out, make your case, show your interest and passion and I feel confident it will work out for you too!
