Aiswarya Bhandari
Studying Biomedical Science has given Aiswarya the freedom to explore different areas of science while keeping her future options open.
When Aiswarya Bhandari left school, she knew she wanted to study something that combined science and health. Studying Biomedical Science gave her the opportunity to explore both, while keeping her future options open.
"What really appealed to me was how many pathways Biomedical Science offers. Whether you're interested in clinical careers, research, industry or postgraduate study, it opens the door to so many possibilities while letting you explore lots of different aspects of science."
As she progressed through her studies, Aiswarya came to appreciate just how much flexibility Biomedical Science offered.
"I like that you begin with a broad understanding of lots of different areas before focusing on what interests you most. Later on, you can keep your studies broad or dive deeper into specific subjects, so you're not putting yourself in a box too early. If your interests change, that's okay too."
Outside the lecture theatre, Aiswarya has particularly enjoyed the practical learning opportunities and the supportive community at Waipapa Taumata Rau.
Working in the labs has been one of the most valuable parts of my studies because it lets you learn beyond the lecture slides. I've also loved meeting people who are genuinely curious about understanding the world at a deeper level.
Those experiences have helped open new opportunities, including a Summer Research Scholarship with the Liggins Institute, where she's gaining first-hand experience in health research.
Looking ahead, Aiswarya is considering a future in either research or audiology, but she's grateful that studying Biomedical Science has allowed her to keep an open mind while discovering what interests her most.
"One thing I'd tell future students is that Biomedical Science isn't just a pathway into medicine. Go in with an open mind because there are so many different directions you can take.
"Don't compare yourself to other people either. Focus on building good habits, ask questions, and explore what genuinely interests you. That's how you'll find the path that's right for you."
