For Rishta Sharma, studying health was never just about treating illness. It was about understanding the bigger picture behind why health inequities exist and how communities can be better supported to thrive.

“I’ve always enjoyed being involved in my community, whether through volunteering, cultural groups, or supporting others,” she says. “That interest naturally led me toward public health and learning more about how we can improve outcomes for different populations.”

Rishta says her interest in public health was shaped by volunteering, community involvement, and learning more about the inequities different populations face.

“Learning about systemic inequities and health disparities in New Zealand and globally was a turning point for me,” she says. “It was eye-opening to see the bigger picture and understand how I could be part of improving it.”

One of the things Rishta enjoys most about the Bachelor of Health Sciences is the variety within the degree.

“You cover so many topics, from epidemiology and mental health to policy, data analysis, and health promotion. There’s never a dull moment.”

She also says the placement programme has been one of the highlights of her studies.

“Taking the theory from lectures and applying it in the real world is really valuable,” she says. “My placement gave me the chance to work on campaigns and explore different ways to reach communities.”

Through her studies, Rishta says she’s developed a much broader understanding of health.

“Health isn’t just about what happens in a clinical space,” she says. “It’s shaped by our environment, policies, education, and social systems. It’s about prevention and justice, not just treatment.”

Looking ahead, Rishta hopes to continue specialising in epidemiology and public health research, with a focus on equity-driven solutions.

“I want to help dismantle barriers to healthcare and ensure every community has the opportunity to live a healthy life.”
