Extracurricular activities

To complete the Business Navigators programme, students need to complete a minimum of 60 hours of extracurricular activities in each calendar year that they are enrolled in Bachelor of Commerce courses, submit a log of the activities at the end of each semester, and submit a reflection on the activities near the end of their Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Eligible extracurricular activities are any activity related to being a university student (i.e. it is linked to the University of Auckland or it is an activity for university students organised by a third party) that can be mapped to one or more of these categories:

  • Builds/enhances your leadership, and/or innovation and entrepreneurship, and/or scholarship skills
  • Builds/expands your social networks
  • Helps improve your employability and/or better prepares you for postgraduate study.

Examples of eligible extracurricular activities include:

  • Business Navigators Club activities 
  • Passport to Business
  • Case Club competitions
  • Activities run by the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE), including: 
    • Open entry:
      • Summer Lab
      • Solve It Corporate Innovation sprint
      • Technology training - for example, 3D Printer, CNC Router, Laser Cutter, Soldering Station, Vinyl Cutter, Sewing Machine, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, 5G, Internet of Things
      • Velocity Ideas Challenge
      • Ignite Innovation (must have an idea)
      • Velocity $100k Challenge
      • Monthly Māori Entrepreneurship Wananga
      • Web3 Hackathon
      • Start-up Careers workshops
    • By application: 
      • Velocity Leadership Committee
      • Kurutao Māori Entrepreneurial Leaders
      • Start-up Interns
      • Vanguard Entrepreneurial Leaders Expedition
      • Venture Lab incubator

If students complete 40 hours doing Innovation Path activities (which include many of the CIE activities listed above) and also complete 40 hours in another Path (Community Engagement Path, Global Citizens Path, Leadership Path) they will potentially qualify for the University of Auckland Distinguished Graduate Award.

  • Dean's Leadership Award (exclusive to Business Navigators students in the final year of their degree
  • Exclusive talks, presentations and events
  • Participating in other student clubs
  • Participating in other student development programmes
  • Volunteering for University events, e.g. Mānawa Mai Open Day
