About our department
Physiology is the study of how the body functions in health and disease, driven by questions relating to fundamental science and disease mechanisms.

The Department of Physiology was established in 1967 with the appointment of Professor Jack Sinclair as the inaugural Chair of Physiology. Professor Sinclair conducted his early research with Sir John Eccles, a Nobel Prize laureate. The department has a rich history of research discoveries in the fields of respiratory, cardiovasular, sensory and fetal physiology. Our research and teaching staff have won awards at the highest levels and deliver world-class education to nurture the development of the next generation of biomedical scientists.
There are many exciting opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students to get involved in the research life of the department, including Summer Studentships, postgraduate projects, and PhD programmes.
