Jonah Tangaroa

Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health student Jonah talks about his journey through university and towards pursuing health equity in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

"Kia Orana, my name is Jonah Tangaroa, and I'm currently undertaking a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, specialising in Māori health. I love that I'm not only learning how to pursue health equity alongside Indigenous people but also being taught how to achieve this by Indigenous academics.

"When I came to the University, I had to go through the Tertiary Foundation Certificate programme to gain University Entrance. It was just by chance that I met people who told me about the Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme (MAPAS) and Hikitia Te Ora - Certificate in Health Sciences programme. The engagement and whakawhanaungatanga with amazing people from MAPAS and Te Kupenga Hauora Māori (Department of Māori Health) helped me find a pathway forward.

I'm hoping that in one way or another, my journey will help to support, create and leave behind a better world.

"While our clinicians are undoubtedly invaluable, we must also recognise the significance of those working 'upstream' to collaboratively address the systemic challenges and alter the trajectories faced by many Indigenous and minority groups.

"One of the things I find most rewarding about postgraduate studies is the opportunity to build upon the strong foundation laid during the Hikitia Te Ora - Certificate in Health Sciences and Bachelor of Health Sciences programmes. Postgrad teaches you that there is so much more to learn and unlearn.

"There are so many different areas of need that are important to address, and that requires us to all work collaboratively, especially when moving towards that space of health equity for people in Aotearoa and across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa (the Pacific Ocean). Addressing those underlying causes and supporting people the way they need us to.

"My advice for people who are considering postgraduate study is to do it! We're pursuing health equity, so wherever you choose to serve, postgraduate study will prepare you for that space.
