Medical Imaging student Jasmine Gulanes is working toward a career that combines science and technology with hands-on clinical experience and meaningful patient care.
Jasmine Gulanes always knew she wanted to work in healthcare, but it took time to find the career that suited her. Medical Imaging stood out for its combination of science, technical skills and working directly with patients.
“I didn’t realise at school just how many different healthcare careers there were to explore. What appealed to me about Medical Imaging was the balance between science, technical skills and patient care, as well as the different career pathways available after graduating.”
Now studying the Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) at Waipapa Taumata Rau, Jasmine says the mix of classroom and clinical learning has been one of the highlights.
Clinical placements give you invaluable experience working with real patients and
learning how to apply and adapt what you’ve learned in different clinical environments.
Anatomy labs have also given Jasmine the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the human body, while working on cases alongside students from Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Optometry has shown her how different health professions contribute to patient care.
For Jasmine, Medical Imaging is as much about people as it is about producing diagnostic images.
“You might only see a patient for a few minutes during their healthcare journey, and they could be in pain, anxious or worried about what their images might show. You need to build rapport, put them at ease and get the images they need. I want to make a difference by helping patients get the answers they need through medical imaging.”
Looking ahead, Jasmine is keeping her options open, with the possibility of specialising in an area such as MRI, ultrasound or interventional radiology.
“There’s such a variety of work you can do, and no two days are the same. Medical Imaging is an important part of healthcare, and there are so many opportunities to continue developing and specialising throughout your career.”
