Centre for Optical Space Systems
Bringing together laser communications, space monitoring and atmospheric sensing research and technology to enable safer, secure, sustainable and resilient space use.
The Centre for Optical Space Systems transforms astronomical optics into practical space capability. It brings together research and technologies in laser communications, space situational awareness and atmospheric sensing to address a challenge: enabling safer, more secure, sustainable and resilient use of space as orbital activity, data demand and environmental pressures increase.
Our research
The Centre’s research spans free-space and quantum optical communications, optical tracking of satellites and space debris, atmospheric turbulence measurement and forecasting, advanced telescope instrumentation, and the environmental effects of spacecraft re-entry. We connect fundamental optical and astronomical science with space systems, drawing on the University's wider space research, engineering and systems capability and working with partners including DLR, the Australasian Optical Ground Station Network, the universities of Warwick, Durham and Heriot-Watt, government agencies and industry.
Engagement with Māori and Pacific communities will be developed through genuine partnership, including opportunities around observatory siting, environmental stewardship, data sovereignty and the training of rangatahi in space, photonics and engineering. We also support public engagement, student participation and community-informed discussion of the benefits, risks and responsible use of space technologies.
Our facilities
Taiaho Observatory is the University of Auckland’s optical ground station at Ardmore, developed to support satellite laser communications, space situational awareness and atmospheric research. Its robotic telescope, environmental sensors and international links provide a practical testbed for tracking spacecraft, receiving optical signals and advancing New Zealand’s space capability and resilience.
How you can work with us
We welcome enquiries from academic researchers interested in collaborative projects, shared facilities, student supervision and international research partnerships. We also work with government and industry partners on applied research, technology development and optical space services. Commercial engagements can be undertaken through our associated company, Amio Space Limited.
