Faculty of Science Orientation Day is filled with information to help you be prepared for the start of your new degree.
Orientation is our way of formally welcoming you to our faculty. You’ll also discover all the facilities and support services at the University, and have the opportunity to meet other new students.
Science Orientation Day for undergraduate students

Join us to familiarise yourself with the faculty and its support structures, meet fellow students and prepare for your first week of lectures.
During Orientation we have a number of activities and information sessions that will help prepare you for the challenges ahead, including tips and strategies for staying on top of your studies.
The day starts at 8.30am with a pōwhiri and welcome by key faculty staff and current students. You are invited to assemble at John Hood Plaza behind the Business School. You will get the opportunity to meet the Faculty of Science staff, your fellow students and ask any questions you have about your programme.

- Pōwhiri and welcome
Assemble at the John Hood Plaza to be led to the official University welcome pōwhiri by key faculty staff and students.
- Campus Tour
Be introduced to the City Campus and the Science buildings you will be studying in.
- Faculty welcome presentation
Hear from academics across the faculty about the transition to University, who to go to for support and managing your time well.
- Major information session
Learn about the structure and academic requirements of your new degree and what to expect in your first few weeks.
A light lunch will be provided.
- DELNA Screening
A chance for new students to take the Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment.
- Clubs and services expo
A chance for new students to meet a variety of student clubs and support services offered including the Science Student Mentors who can share helpful tips and advice for new students.
Science Orientation Day for postgraduate students
Postgraduate orientation is a recommended event, covering important information about your degree and the support services available to you. Sessions will be useful for new and returning students.

The day’s programme includes a number of specialised information sessions, welcome activities and workshops designed to get you thinking.
Throughout the day, students can expect to:
- Attain an overview of the services, opportunities and support available to postgraduate students across the University
- Have the opportunity to engage with fellow postgraduate students in an interactive faculty workshop and afternoon tea
- Hear from current students who have advice and ideas to share
- Find out how to get involved in your Postgraduate Students’ Association and attend social events, skills workshops, research showcases, programmes outside your department, and more.
