We aim to use chemical principles, science and technology to tackle global issues and problems that directly impact on sustainability.

Our research

The Centre for Green Chemical Science tackles global sustainability challenges by working across disciplinary boundaries. The Centre has members across three faculties within the University and leverages the expertise of internal and external partners. The Centre aims to shape research directions informed by Māori through its emerging connections with Ngāi Tahu, Waikato Tainui, and Whakarewarewa marae.

How can you work with us?

We welcome all students who have an interest in Green Chemical Science. The CGCS current offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree with a Green Chemical Science Specialisation. This programme will provide students with the skills to develop solutions for complex, multidisciplinary sustainability problems.

From 2020, we will also offer postgraduate specialisations in Green Chemical Science (PGDiploma, BSc(Hons), BAdvSci(Hons) and MSc), and a postgraduate level course focussing on advanced principles in Green Chemical Science and research (CHEM 760).

We conduct a wide range of interdisciplinary research in Green Chemical Science. The centre has over 25 members from the faculties of Science, Engineering, and Medical and Health Sciences. Our research focuses on areas of water quality and pollution prevention, sustainable synthesis, catalysis, valorisation of waste and renewable energy. We are keen to talk with students who want to conduct research in Green Chemical Science as well as industrial and other partners interested in identifying sustainable solutions based on new green chemical science technologies.
