DUAL Study – Dietary interventions for gut and mental health symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
This study aims to explore whether dietary approaches can improve gut symptoms, mental health symptoms, and quality of life in adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) who also experience symptoms of anxiety and/or depression.
What's involved?
If you take part in this study, you will:
- follow a study diet for eight weeks with the support of the research team, including a session with our research dietitian every two weeks by phone or video call
- complete questionnaires about gut symptoms, mental health symptoms, and quality of life at the start and end of the study
- complete a diet record at the start and end of the study
- provide a stool (poo) sample at the start and end of the study (optional).
You can take part in this study from anywhere in Aotearoa New Zealand. Participants will receive a $150 food hamper to help with food costs during the study, as well as $100 worth of gift vouchers to thank them for their time and effort.
Eligibility criteria
To participate, you must:
- be aged 18–65 years
- live in Aotearoa New Zealand
- have IBS and experience some symptoms of anxiety and/or depression (this will be confirmed during screening).
Who may not be eligible?
You may not be able to take part if you:
- have another gastrointestinal condition, such as coeliac disease or
inflammatory bowel disease - are pregnant or breastfeeding.
