About us

The Rural Health Unit is a part of the Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care in the School of Population Health.

The Rural Health Unit (RHU) was established to develop the Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland undergraduate training, education and qualifications framework for the rural health workforce in Aotearoa.

Our focus is to implement the rural strategy within Mātauranga Hauora, Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (FMHS). We are also responsible for managing the Regional Rural Admission Scheme.

We are committed to addressing the priority health concerns of rural whānau and communities. This underlying drive helps us to shape our programmes to focus on deliverables that will impact positively on social health determinants.

Our mission is to apply rural orientated knowledge systems, innovative rural practices and rural focused research, through collaboration with rural communities, to sustainably regenerate rural people and places.
