Akash Ravi works as a Data Consultant at Spark NZ.

Akash’s interest in data, analytics and large-scale systems began during his undergraduate studies at Amrita School of Engineering. Looking to build on this interest through a combination of academic research and real-world application, he continued his studies at the University of Auckland via a transnational education pathway.

During his time at the University, Akash received an India High Achievers’ Scholarship and worked on an industry project with Smartly. He now works as a Data Consultant at Spark NZ, and a joint paper based on his dissertation has been accepted for publication and presentation at an international conference.

Akash shares his experience as a student at the University of Auckland.

Why did you choose the University and the Master of Professional Studies in Data Science?

The University has a strong reputation in Data Science. I was particularly drawn to its historical connection with the R programming language. The MProfSt in Data Science stood out for its balance between technical depth and real-world application through industry research, meaning I could grow both academically and professionally.

The TNE pathway made my transition from India to Auckland seamless.

If you’re looking for a balance of academic excellence, practical learning, and global exposure, I’d strongly recommend studying at the University of Auckland.

How would you describe your academic experience in the programme?

It was challenging but rewarding. My dissertation and the industry project with Smartly allowed me to apply my skills in real-world contexts, using technologies and platforms that are highly relevant in today’s data science landscape. The lecturers and supervisors were supportive and approachable, and working with students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds also made the experience far more enriching.

The TNE pathway made my transition from India to Auckland seamless. The foundational knowledge I gained during my undergraduate studies was extended to a more advanced and industry-focused level.

What was the highlight of your time at the University?

Working with Smartly on my industry-focused dissertation project. I developed a framework for entity resolution and corporate network inference using large business datasets, which exposed me to production-level data engineering. After the programme, I continued at Smartly as an Associate Data Engineer.

It also led to a cherished milestone in my academic journey – a joint research paper based on my dissertation has been accepted for publication and presentation at an international conference. That recognition is especially meaningful to me as an international student.

What key skills did you develop, and how did they prepare you for your next step?

Academically, the programme helped me think critically about data and models and approach problems in a structured, analytical way. The industry project sharpened my technical skills and more importantly, improved my ability to communicate complex ideas, collaborate with professionals and work independently.

What are you doing now, and how did your university experience help you get there?

I’m now working as a Data Consultant at Spark New Zealand, supporting large-scale business and data initiatives. The programme gave me a solid foundation in statistics, machine learning, and analytical thinking. The University’s industry connections helped me access internships, research opportunities, and professional networks that ultimately shaped my career path.

What advice would you give to students in India who are considering a pathway to the University of Auckland?

If you’re looking for a balance of academic excellence, practical learning, and global exposure, I’d strongly recommend studying at the University of Auckland.
