Prize Value Criteria
A and J Lee Social Design Prize in Architecture $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time Master of Architecture (Professional) thesis student who has demonstrated excellence in architectural design for socially sustainable, humanitarian values (see Notes i and ii).
Anna Nathan Prizes in Early Keyboard Music $3000
$2000
One Prize of $3,000 will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest mark for a performance on historic keyboard at a competition organised by the School of Music. One Prize of $2,000 will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest mark for a performance on historic keyboard of a non-standard repertoire work as defined in the guidelines for the competition which will be advertised annually by the School of Music.
Auckland Brick Manufacturer's Prize $300 The Prize will be awarded annually to a student enrolled in Part I of the Degree of Master of Architecture (Professional) (MArch(Prof)) for achieving the most meritorious design project in Advanced Design 1 or 2 (ARCHDES 700 and 701).
Auckland Town Planning Association Prize in Planning $100 All persons who are enrolled as students in the programme for the Bachelor of Urban Planning (Honours) degree or for the Master of Urban Planning (Professional) will be eligible to compete for the Prize. The Prize will be awarded to the most meritorious Research Study submitted for either programme.
Auckland University Singers’ Choral Prize $1200 The Prize will be awarded annually to a full-time student in the Bachelor of Music degree who has achieved outstanding results in choral studies and who makes an outstanding contribution to the choral programme.
Bishop Music Prizes $800 (Senior) & $400 (Junior) One Junior Prize of $400 will be awarded annually to the student who has received the highest mark in MUS 111 and who is continuing to study Composition in the year following the award.
One Senior Prize of $800 will be awarded to the student who has achieved the highest mark in MUS 211 or MUS 311 and who is continuing to study Composition in the year following the award.  
Boffa Miskell Prize in Urban Planning $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the best result in a specified assignment in URBPLAN310 – Urban Planning Studio Five (see Note i).
Carl and Alberta Rosenfeldt Prize in Chamber Music $800 The Prize will be awarded annually to the most outstanding chamber music group(s), the members of which are enrolled in the subject Chamber Music.
Chisholm Memorial Prize $50 The Prize will be awarded annually, subject to regulation 7, for the most meritorious set of two original sketches preferably of subjects of architectural interest. Candidates may submit one or more sets of two sketches
Douglas Mews Composition Prize $150 The Prize will be awarded each year by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Music for the best composition entered for it by any student enrolled in the School of Music.
Drake Prize $500 plus a Medal The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student enrolled in a BMus, BMus(Hons), PGDipMus or MMus, who achieves the highest mark in a musicology essay.
Dr Garry Tonks Prize for Architectural Technology $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student enrolled in Part 1 of the Master of Architecture (Professional) programme whose submitted studio project receives the highest mark for innovative technology.
Elam Art Prize $800 One Prize of $800 will be awarded annually to the student enrolled in Year Four of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) who has received the highest marks across Year Three studio courses in the preceding year.
Faculty of Creative Arts & Industries Prizes for Best Doctoral Thesis
$500 A Prize will be awarded annually to the student or students who, in the opinion of the sub-committee formed by the Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts and Industries to judge the nominations, completed the best doctoral thesis or theses in the previous year.
George Hopkins Prize $50 Subject to Regulation 5, the Prize will be awarded annually to the most outstanding woodwind student of the year who has been taking performance as part of the programme for the diploma in Music or the degree of Bachelor of Music or the degree of Bachelor of Music (Honours).
Gordon Harris Art Supplies Prizes $500 Voucher One Prize will be awarded annually for the most meritorious painting work submitted for examination by a student enrolled in their fourth year of study for the degree of the Bachelor of Fine Arts or the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours). The second Prize will be awarded for the most meritorious painting work submitted for examination by a student enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts degree at Elam School of Fine Arts.
Graham Allen Prizes in Musical Theatre $500 The Prizes will be awarded annually to the student(s) enrolled in the School of Music at the University of Auckland who have obtained the highest marks for a performance within the musical theatre genre at a competition organised by the School of Music.
Graham Ford Dawson Prize $600 The Prize will be awarded annually to a candidate who achieves the best result in course ARCHDES 301.
Harrison Grierson Best Practice Award in Urban Planning and Design Up to $1500 The Award will be made annually to the full-time student who has completed the third year of study for the Bachelor of Urban Planning degree, and has enrolled in their fourth and final year, who either obtained the highest marks in individual work or who, in the view of the Selection Committee, best demonstrates an understanding of the integration of theory with practice in urban planning and design.
Hill Young Cooper Prize $400 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who produces the best work on policy pertaining to Part IV of the Bachelor of Urban Planning (Honours) Degree or Year II of the Master of Urban Planning (Professional) Degree.
Janetta McStay Prize for Pianists $650 The Prize will be awarded each year by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Music to the most deserving Piano student who has completed at least one year of a Performance degree or diploma programme of Music at the University of Auckland and is proceeding to further piano study in the School of Music or elsewhere.
KBB Music Jazz Brass Player of the Year Prize $500 KBB Music Voucher The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student majoring in Jazz Performance who has achieved the highest mark in MUS 371 (Jazz Performance 6) on a brass instrument.
KBB Music Jazz Percussionist of the Year Prize $500 KBB Music Voucher The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student majoring in Jazz Performance who has achieved the highest mark in MUS 371 (Jazz Performance 6) for percussion.
KBB Music Jazz Woodwind Player of the Year Prize $500 KBB Music Voucher The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student majoring in Jazz Performance who has achieved the highest mark in MUS 371 (Jazz Performance 6) on a woodwind instrument.
Ken Wilson Clarinet Prize $600 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who has been enrolled full-time at any level in a Music Performance programme in the School of Music, and who has achieved the highest overall marks in two or more Performance courses for the clarinet.
Llewelyn Jones Prize in Music for Piano $700 The Prize will be awarded for excellence in the composition and performance of a new work for piano (with or without electronic modification). The Prize will be awarded on the results of an annual competition amongst student composers and student pianists. Entries for this competition in the form of musical scores will have been composed within the year preceding the entry date, and must be submitted to the Head of the School of Music with the completed entry form by June 1st in the year of the award.
Monier Group Prizes $350 per Group The Prizes will be awarded annually to students taking Part III of the degree of Bachelor of Architectural Studies, for designs selected from the studio work of that year that were submitted as a group project involving two or more students.

New Zealand Solar Action Prize $250 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student completing the most outstanding work in any course or courses concerned with energy-efficient design, or energy, studied for Part I or Part II of the degree of Master of Architecture (Professional).
NZACS Prizes $600 The Prize will be awarded annually and will be shared equally between the two students achieving the best grades in ARCHPRM 701 Professional Studies 2.
NZIA Central Innovation Student Design Prizes Varies For Part 1–3 of the BAS and Part 1 of the MArch(Prof), the top student will receive an award of $1000 and three other awards of $500 will be made to highly commended students. For Part 2 of the MArch(Prof) the competition is among four nominees from the Schools of Architecture at the University of Auckland, Victoria University and UNITEC and will be assessed by a jury comprising the NZIA President, a nominated NZIA architect and an invited architect from Australia. The winner will receive $5000 cash and will travel to Sydney to view architecture and meet architects.
Opus International Consultants’ Transportation Planning Prizes $500 The Prizes will be awarded annually to the second, third or fourth year student and the Postgraduate Diploma or Masters student in the School of Architecture and Planning who obtained the highest marks for an assignment or research project on the subject of Transportation Planning. To be eligible to hold this Prize the recipient must have obtained a mark of 80% or above.
Pasifika Student Prize in Planning $400
The Prize will be awarded once every two calendar years to the Pacific Island student who has achieved the highest GPA in a Planning programme at any level, over the previous two years.
Potter Interior Systems Ltd Prizes in Architecture $500 The Prizes will be awarded for outstanding work in the field of architectural construction. One Prize will be awarded to the outstanding student in Part III of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies, and one to the outstanding student in Part I of the degree of Master of Architecture (Professional).
Robert Riddell Heritage Prize $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who achieves the highest mark in either URBPLAN 302 or ARCHGEN 750 (or equivalent over the duration of the award) and who demonstrates an understanding of heritage and advances its preservation and conservation, as evidenced in the student's coursework and tutorial presentation.
Rosemary Grice Memorial Prize $125 The award will be made for the most meritorious work submitted for examinations by a student in the First Professional year of the programme for the Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Sagar-Vandewart Prize for String Players $600 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time string student achieving the highest mark in MUS 121 (see Note i) who is proceeding to stage two of the Classical Performance programme at the School of Music at the University of Auckland.
Scott Ellery Medal Medal The Medal will be awarded to the student of Photography, Printmaking or Sculpture considered by the academic staff of the Elam School of Fine Arts to have produced the most exceptional work amongst those completing the Degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) that year. 
Simon Devitt Prize for Photography $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who produces the best photograph in Creative Arts and Industries.
Spring Prize for String Players $800 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time string student achieving the highest mark in MUS 221 (see Note i) who is proceeding to stage three of the Classical Performance programme at the School of Music at the University of Auckland.
Stephenson & Turner Prize $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student who has, in the opinion of the selection committee delivered the highest standard of excellence and innovation in their ARCHDES 796 thesis. The winning thesis will be selected by a panel comprised of at least two representatives from Stephenson & Turner and the Head of the School of Architecture and Planning (or nominee).
Studio Art Supplies Prize $500 Voucher The Prize will be awarded for the most meritorious painting work submitted for examination by a student enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma of Fine Arts (PGDipFA). The Prize will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of the Head of the Elam School of Fine Arts (in consultation with a representative from Studio Art Supplies).
Tom and Anne Morris Violin Prize Use of the D.Atanassov 2006 violin for a period of one year The Prize will be awarded annually to a full-time student of the violin who has achieved excellent academic results and would benefit from the use of this instrument.
Urbanism+ Award for Excellence in Urban Design up to $2000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the enrolled student who delivers outstanding work in the Master of Urban Design Programme. The winning project will be selected by a panel comprised of at least one representative from the School of Architecture and Planning and one representative from Urbanism+.
Vernon Brown Memorial Award $500 The Award consisting of a medallion and a bursary for one year of a value of not less than $500 is made annually to that student whose studio work in Part III of the degree of Bachelor of Architectural Studies is judged to be the best by the examiners. No application to be considered for the award is necessary.
Warren Trust Prizes $5000 Three Prizes will be awarded annually to the three full-time students who obtain the highest GPA across all courses undertaken in the third year of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree programme.
W D Wilson Prize $200 The Prize will be awarded annually, subject to regulation 6, to the student who has made the most worthwhile contribution during the programme for Part III of the degree of Bachelor of Architectural Studies by his or her involvement in studio work and student affairs.
Winifred Stiles Viola Prize $700 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time viola student achieving the highest mark in MUS 121, 221, 321 or 721 (see Note i) who is proceeding to further viola study in the School of Music or elsewhere.
