The Award was established in 2018 and is funded by a 1980s science alumnus of the University of Auckland, who completed a Doctor of Education degree in Hong Kong before establishing centres teaching English to pre-secondary school children.

The main purpose of the Award is to support international students enrolled in Part II of a Bachelor of Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) who aspire to teach ESOL.
