This Prize was established by Sir William and Lady Goodfellow to be awarded to students of the Auckland School of Engineering. It commemorates Major James Gordon Goodfellow who after distinguishing himself in his examinations for the Institution of Civil Engineers, served in the British Army during the First World War and was killed in action.

The recipient will be expected to use the greater part of the Prize money for such purposes as will promote his or her development as a professional engineer.
