Prize Value Criteria
A J Park Intellectual Property Law Prize $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest marks in course LAWCOMM 404 (Intellectual Property Law).
Auckland District Law Society's Prize $1000 The Auckland District Law Society has agreed to make an award of $1,000 to the student who, being resident in the Auckland University district in the year in which he/she graduates LLB or LLB(Hons) from The University of Auckland, has the best undergraduate record.
Auckland Women Lawyers’ Association Writing Prize $250 The Prize will be awarded annually to the law student who submits the most meritorious essay of 7,000-10,000 words that complies with the Law School Style Guide on the relationship between women and the law. Attach a covering letter and a 250 word abstract.
Baldwins Law and Information Technology Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest marks in LAWCOMM 426 (Law and Information Technology).
Bernard Brown Literary Award $500 The Award will be made annually to the student enrolled in Part II, III or IV of an LLB or LLB(Hons) degree in the Faculty of Law who has submitted the best piece of creative writing in English or Te Reo on any aspects of law or custom or their literary, philosophical or political underpinnings in a competition organised by the Faculty of Law.
Class of 1965 Prize in Commercial Arbitration $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest mark in Law 421 – Commercial Arbitration.
Davies-Sproule Memorial Prize $200 The Prize will be awarded annually by the University of Auckland Council to the student of the University who in the year immediately preceding the year of award has been reported by the Faculty of Law to have done for the LLB or LLB(Hons) degree the best work in the subject LAWGENRL 430 Advanced Family Law. If there is no work of sufficient merit in that subject, then the Prize will be awarded to the student reported to have done the best work for the subject LAWGENRL 433 Family Law.
Desmond Lewis Memorial Prizes in International Law $1500 The Prizes will be awarded annually to the students who, in the opinion of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, have in that year done the best work in LAWPUBL 402 International Law.
Dr R G McElroy Prize in Administrative Law $1,000 The Prize will be awarded to the student with the highest mark in LAW 403 Advanced Administrative Law, provided that the highest mark results in a grade not less than A-.  If (a) LAW 403 is not taught, or (b) no student in LAW 403 achieves a grade of at least A-, the Prize may be awarded to the student with the highest mark in LAW 402 Administrative Law or LAW 440 Judicial Review.
F A de la Mare Memorial Prize Varies The Prize will be awarded each year to the student in the Faculty of Law who, in respect of the year of Prize is judged to have the best academic record based on his or her work in LLB Part III (Land Law, Equity, Jurisprudence, Legal Research 2 and elective courses comprising 55 points).
Gary Davies Memorial Prize Medallion The two medallions will be awarded each year by the University of Auckland Council to each of the two Law students who have been awarded the Sir Robert Stout Moot Shield.
Gaze Burt Prize for Master of Laws (Commercial) $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who, having completed the requirements for the degree Master of Law (Commercial) in that calendar year, has the highest GPA in that degree.
Gaze Burt Prize in Franchise Law $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student who has the highest grade in the course LAWCOMM758 (Franchising Law).
Geoffrey Powell Prize $120 The Prize will be awarded annually to the participant adjudged best mooter in the final of the Stout Shield Mooting Competition.
Gina Rudland Memorial Prize for Maori Mooting $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student judged to be the best mooter in the Māori Issues Mooting competition in the Faculty of Law.
Greg Everard Memorial Prize for Mooting $2500 The Prize will be awarded to the winner of an annual moot competition to be known as the Greg Everard Memorial Moot. Eligibility for and the terms of the competition will be determined each year by the Dean of the Faculty of Law (or nominee). It will be a prerequisite to eligibility that entrants have already participated in one of the Faculty’s moots.
J P Campbell Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually by the University of Auckland Council on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, to the student of The University of Auckland who, in the year of award will have completed the examinations for the LLB or LLB (Hons) Degree, and who, during his or her programme of study for that Degree, shall have done the best work in any two final-year elective programmes.
Judge Avinash Deobhakta Memorial Prize in Criminal Procedure $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest mark in LAWPUBL 430 Criminal Procedure.
Lallu Ram Sharma Prize in Pacific Legal Studies $100 The Prize will be awarded to the student who in the year of the award has submitted the best research essay in LAWGENRL 428 South Pacific Legal Studies.
Resolution Institute Dispute Resolution Prize $600 The Prize will be awarded annually to a full-time LLB or LLB(Hons) student achieving the best grade in course LAWGENRL 424 (Negotiation, Mediation and Dispute Resolution).
LexisNexis Prize in Land Law $500 Book Voucher The Prize will be awarded annually to the student enrolled in an LLB or LLB(Hons) who achieves the highest mark in LAW 301 (Land Law), or who has otherwise excelled in an undergraduate property-related subject.
Lowndes Jordan Prize in Corporate Legal Studies $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually by the University of Auckland Council, on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Law, to the best student in Corporate Legal Studies.
Meltzer Mason Prize in Company Liquidations $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student enrolled for LLB or LLB(Hons) who achieves the highest grade in the course LAW 423 (Company Liquidations). In the event that LAW 423 Company Liquidations is not offered in any year, the prize shall be awarded, subject to the donor’s approval, to the best student in the course LAW 441 Creditors’ Remedies.
Meredith Connell Criminal Law Sentencing Advocacy Prizes Varies The Prizes will be awarded annually to the two full or part-time students who place first and second in the oral performance final of the sentencing submissions component of LAW 201 Criminal Law. One prize of up to $700 will be awarded to the first place student and a second prize of up to $300 will be awarded to the runner-up.
Meredith Connell Prize in Corporate Finance Law $2000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student who has achieved the highest overall mark in LAWCOMM 444, Corporate Finance Law.
Morris Legal Family Property Prize $1,000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student enrolled in an LLB or LLB(Hons) who achieves the highest mark in LAWGENRL 429 Law of Family Property.
Northey Prize in Immigration Law $1,000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest mark in LAWPUBL 424 Immigration and Refugee Law.
New Zealand Law Review Prizes Subscription The Legal Research Foundation will annually award subscriptions to the New Zealand Law Review to the three students who: (a) have completed in the year of the award the requirements of Part II of the LLB; and (b) in the opinion of the Dean of Law have achieved the best work in aggregate over LAW 121(G) (Law and Society) and LAW 131 (Legal Method) and the four courses of Part II.
New Zealand Society of Notaries Incorporated Conflict of Laws Prize $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest marks in the course LAWCOMM 407 (Conflict of Laws).
Pacific Lawyers Association Prize for Pacific Islands Mooting $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the person who achieved the highest mark in the Pacific Islands Mooting competition in the Faculty of Law.
Privacy Commissioner Prize in Privacy Law $250 The Prize will be awarded to the student enrolled in a Master of Law, Master of Legal Studies, Postgraduate Certificate in Law or a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree who has achieved the highest overall mark in LAWPUBL 725 Privacy Law in the year of offer. In the event that LAWPUBL 725 Privacy Law is not offered in any year, the prize shall be awarded, subject to the donor's approval, to the student achieving the highest overall mark in LAWCOMM 746 Data Privacy and the Law.
Richmond Chambers Prizes in Jurisprudence $1000 The Prizes will be awarded annually to the full-time students achieving the highest marks in each stream of LAW 316 (Jurisprudence).
Robertsons Prize in Insurance Law $1500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full or part-time student who has achieved the highest overall mark in LAWCOMM 424, Insurance Law.
Shortland Chambers Prize in Public Law $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the student enrolled for an LLB who achieves the highest mark in LAW 211.
Simpson Grierson Employment Law Prize $1500 The Prize will be awarded to the student with the highest mark, overall, in LAWPUBL 425 Employment Law. The best mark will be derived from the exam plus the 30% for the opinion or moot.
Staples Rodway Phil Banks Prize in Tax Law $1,000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student achieving the highest marks in LAW 403 (Tax Law).
The He Maunga Teitei Prize for Academic Achievement $1000 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time Māori student achieving the highest aggregate grade in all compulsory Law courses to the end of Stage III (see Note i).
The Johnston Foundation Prizes in Company Law $1000 Two Prizes of up to $1000 each will be awarded annually to the students achieving the highest marks in LAW 402 Company Law. One Prize will be awarded in Semester One and the other in Semester Two (see Note i).
Thomson Reuters Criminal Law Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the LLB or LLB (Hons) student achieving the best result in course LAW 201 Criminal Law.
Thomson Reuters Medical Law Prize $500 The Prize will be awarded annually to the full-time student who has achieved the highest overall mark in LAWGENRL 432 (Health Care Law).
Thomson Reuters Prize for Civil Procedure Subscription The Prize will be awarded annually to the student achieving the highest marks in course LAWGENRL 421 Civil Procedure.
Thomson Reuters Prize in Torts and Contract $200 Brooker’s Ltd (Thomson Reuters Ltd from 2009), Law Publishers, established a Prize of the annual value of $200 to be awarded to the student (completing Part II of the LLB or LLB(Hons) degree at The University of Auckland) who has the highest aggregate marks in the Law of Torts (LAW 231) and Law of Contract (LAW 241).
Wilson Harle Prize in Commercial Law $1000 and a Book The Prize will be awarded annually to the student enrolled for LLB or LLB(Hons) who achieves the highest mark in LAWCOMM 401 Commercial Law.
