The Scholarship was established in 1999 and is financed by the George Mason Trust.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and support an academically excellent domestic student to undertake doctoral study at the University of Auckland, undertaking research into saving Kauri trees from phytophthora agathidicida.
