University of Auckland scholarships

Guaranteed scholarships
The University of Auckland offers guaranteed postgraduate scholarships to domestic research students who meet grade point average (GPA) thresholds from their qualifying programme.

Kupe Leadership Scholarship
The prestigious Kupe Leadership Scholarship offers a unique opportunity for exceptional students from all faculties to enrich a year of their postgraduate studies.

University of Auckland Research Masters Scholarship
For meritorious students who are citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand applying for an approved research masters degree; value up to $13,655 per annum plus compulsory fees.

University of Auckland Postgraduate Honours/PG Diploma Scholarships
For domestic students enrolled for a postgraduate level honours degree or an approved postgraduate diploma who have achieved a GPA of 8.0 or above in their most recent qualifying programme at a recognised university; value up to $13,655 per annum plus compulsory fees.

University of Auckland Māori Postgraduate Scholarships
For Māori students enrolled in any masters or postgraduate level honours degree, or any postgraduate diploma on or after 1 January 2016 who have achieved a GPA of 7.50 or above in their most recent qualifying programme at a recognised university; value up to $13,655 per annum plus compulsory fees.

University of Auckland Pacific Postgraduate Scholarship
For domestic Pacific students enrolled in any masters or postgraduate level Bachelors honours degree, or any postgraduate diploma on or after 1 January 2016 who have achieved a GPA of 7.50 or above in their most recent qualifying programme at a recognised university; value up to $13,260 per annum plus compulsory fees.

Major scholarships for Arts students

Faculty of Arts Sub-doctoral Postgraduate Scholarship
A Scholarship of up to $10,000 towards compulsory tuition fees for domestic and international students enrolling full-time or part-time in a sub-doctoral postgraduate programme in the Faculty of Arts.

Fatu Feu’u Pacific Arts Prize
A scholarship of up $15,000 to reward excellence in creative practice for Pacific students in Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Fine Arts, Screen Production, or Music, who have the potential to have a positive impact on the creative capital of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific region, based on a holistic view of the student’s practice.

Other scholarships

Garth Maxwell Creative Project Prize
A Prize valued at $5,000 for first prize and $2,200 for second prize to recognise exceptional and innovative work in Drama, Screen Production and Creative Writing by masters and PhD students in a competition held in the Faculty of Arts.

Freemasons University and Postgraduate Scholarships
For students in their final year of a bachelors degree, bachelors honours degree, graduate diploma, postgraduate diploma, masters degree or doctorate in any subject; value up to $10,000 for Postgraduate Scholarships.

Dulcie Bowman Memorial Scholarship
For hearing-impaired woman students in their second or subsequent year of any programme; value up to $3,000.

Raewyn Good Study Award for Māori and Pasifika Social Science Research
For a Māori or Pasifika postgraduate student undertaking a masters degree which involves social sciences research; value up to $6,000.

Elon Wells Scholarship in European Languages
Two Scholarships of up to $9,000 each to support New Zealand citizens and permanent residents to enrol in undergraduate or postgraduate study in a European language.

Elizabeth Ewing Memorial Scholarship in Adolescent and Young Adult Health
A $5,000 Scholarship to support a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident enrolled full-time or part-time in postgraduate research focusing on adolescent and young adult health. Closes 3 May. 

Jean O’Reilly Memorial Postgraduate Scholarship

A Scholarship for full-time honours or masters enrolment in the Faculty of Arts by New Zealand citizens and permanent residents, up to $5,000. Closes 20 April. 

Kendrick Smithyman Scholarship in Poetry
A Scholarship of up to $7,000 for international and domestic students enrolled full time in Stage III of a BA, a BA(Hons), PGDipArts, MA or MCW which includes the study of poetry. Closes 20 April. 

Students of English Perpetual Guardian - Legacy of Elizabeth Mary Phillips
A scholarship of up to $6000 to support a student studying English (BA, MA or higher qualification). Applicants must be NZ residents. Closes 30 April. 

Nicholas Tarling Southeast Asian Studies Masters Award
An award of up to $5,000 for international or domestic students undertaking masters study relating to the Southeast Asian region.

Fred and Helen Hanan Endowed Scholarship in Chinese Studies 
A scholarship to support an international or domestic postgraduate student majoring in Chinese Studies at Honours, Masters or PhD level.  

Evelyn Constance Alexander Scholarship in German
A Scholarship of up to $5,000 to encourage the study of German at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

Professor John Asher Scholarship in German
A Scholarship of $4,500 for international and domestic students enrolled in a BA or an MA in German.
