The Scholarship was established in 2021 and is funded by the Crystal Arts Trust, which was founded by James and Rosetta Allan to support literature, music and visual art. Rosetta is a graduate of the Master of Creative Writing programme and has published both poetry and novels.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to encourage and support students enrolled in the Master of Creative Writing programme in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Auckland.
