The Sonny and Mona Riini Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 in recognition of the significant contribution made by Sonny and Mona to the faculty, and in particular their support as whakaruruhau of the Huarahi Māori Specialisation of the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Programme. The scholarship is funded by the Faculty of Education and Social Work.

The main purpose of the Scholarship is to support and encourage second year, Huarahi Māori students in their pathway of teaching.
